France investigates claims of CAR child abuse by soldiers

A Parisian prosecutor says an investigation is under way into claims French soldiers in the Central African Republic sexually abused children.
France sent an initial 1,600 troops to the country in December 2013 after violence flared following a coup.
On Wednesday, the Guardian newspaper reported that a United Nations worker was suspended after leaking a report on abuses by French troops.
It says a UN report claimed children as young as nine were abused.
Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor's office, said an investigation had been under way since July 2014.
The Guardian said that the alleged abuse took place between December 2013 and June 2014 at a centre for internally displaced people in the Central African Republic capital, Bangui.
Quoting an internal UN report, it says that in one case, a nine-year-old boy and his friend were forced to carry out a sex act by two French soldiers.
In some cases, it says, children were able to give good descriptions of the French soldiers alleged to be involved.
A spokesman for France's Ministry of Defence said in a statement: "The defence ministry has taken and will take the necessary measures to allow the truth to be found.
"If the facts are proven, the strongest penalties will be imposed on those responsible for what would be an intolerable attack on soldiers' values."
The Guardian said a Swedish employee of the United Nations had been suspended after handing the internal UN report to French authorities.
A spokesman for the UN Secretary General said the leaking of an unredacted report constituted "a serious breach of protocol" and could endanger victims and witnesses.
France intervened in its former colony in December 2013, nine months after a rebel alliance, Seleka, captured the capital and ousted President Francois Bozize.
The country descended into ethnic and sectarian violence, with thousands of people fleeing their homes and the UN warning that there was a high risk of genocide.
The UN took over and expanded the African peacekeeping mission in September 2014.

Togo's defeated opposition leader rejects Gnassingbe victory

Togo's defeated opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre says he considers himself the new president, rejecting official election results.
Earlier, Togo's official election body declared President Faure Gnassingbe the winner, with a provisional 59% of the vote.
Mr Fabre, who gained 35%, told AFP news agency the results were a "crime against national sovereignty".
Observers from the African Union said the election was free and fair.
Mr Fabre called on the Togolese to "take their destiny into their own hands".
His party, the opposition Combat for Political Change (Cap 2015), said the results bore "no resemblance to those compiled from reports collected in polling stations by its representatives".
Asked by an AFP reporter if he considered himself the new president-elect, he replied: "Of course."
West African regional leaders led by Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama have been attempting to mediate the dispute, having arrived in the capital Lome on Tuesday.

President Faure Gnassingbe's family has ruled Togo for 48 years.
Mr Gnassingbe has ruled since the 2005 death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema.
Africa news round-up: 29 April
On Monday Mr Fabre called for a delay in announcing the results, citing widespread irregularities.
The final results still need to be confirmed by the country's Constitutional Court.
Turnout was around 53-55%, according to the electoral commission, Ceni - at least 10% lower than the last elections in 2010.
Campaign posters with Faure Gnassingbe say that Togo is "on the way to progress"
The 2005 elections were overshadowed by fraud allegations and violent protests which left at least 400 people dead.
Last year, opposition protests failed to bring about constitutional changes limiting the president to two terms in office - a move that would have prevented Mr Gnassingbe from standing.
Togo's GDP has more than doubled since 2005 and economic growth reached 5.6% in 2014.
But critics say the benefits have mainly gone to a wealthy minority, while most ordinary Togolese still suffer from high poverty and unemployment rates.

Egypt Islamists get life for Kerdasa church attack

A court in Egypt has sentenced 69 Islamists to life in prison for setting fire to a church in a town near Cairo.
Two minors were also jailed for 10 years for their alleged role in the blaze, which started when violence erupted in Kerdasa on 14 August 2013.
A wave of unrest swept the country that day after hundreds of supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi were killed in a crackdown in the capital.
Scores of churches and Christian property were looted and torched.
Members of Morsi's Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, accused the Coptic Christian minority community of participating in what they denounced as a "coup".
They cited Pope Tawadros II's appearance alongside then military chief - now president - Abdul Fattah al-Sisi when he announced that Morsi had been removed from office following widespread protests against him.

'No proof'

In addition to setting fire to the church in Kerdasa, the defendants sentenced on Wednesday were found guilty of attempting to murder civilians and possessing illegal weapons. However, one of the defence lawyers insisted "no proof" had been presented at the trial.
The judge, Mohammed Nagi Shehata, has previously been accused of presiding over unfair trials
"Even the church's priest said he didn't see any of the defendants after the incident," Hany al-Sayed told the Reuters news agency.
Judge Mohammed Nagi Shehata sentenced 183 Morsi supporters to death in February after finding them guilty of killing 13 police officers in Kerdasa on the same day as the church attack.
Human rights groups said that trial was grossly unfair and highlighted Egypt's disregard for national and international law.
Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters, as well as several senior figures in the group, have been sentenced to death or life in prison after mass trials over the past two years which the UN has called "unprecedented in recent history".
Last week, Morsi himself was jailed for 20 years after being convicted of ordering the unlawful detention and torture of opposition protesters during clashes with Brotherhood supporters outside a presidential palace in Cairo in 2012.
In a separate development on Wednesday, another court sentenced 63 people to between one and seven years in prison in connection with violence inside al-Azhar University's campus in the capital in December 2013, state media reported.
